Dyslexia is not a problem with intelligence, effort or eyesight. It's a difference in how the brain maps the squiggles we call letters onto the sounds they stand for. That mapping, what researchers call the phonological loop, is slower and noisier in dyslexic readers, which makes decoding feel like translating a foreign language one syllable at a time.
what's actually happening
Brain imaging consistently shows reduced activation in the left occipito-temporal cortex (the so-called "visual word form area") and in the temporo-parietal regions that handle sound-letter mapping. Compensating regions in the right hemisphere often light up more than usual. The short version: the brain is working harder to do the same job.
About 1 in 10 people are dyslexic. It runs in families. It is not caused by lazy parenting, screen time, or a wobbly diet. And, important, it has nothing to do with how clever a child is.
what doesn't help (despite the marketing)
- Coloured lenses sold as a universal cure, they help a subset of readers (see our Irlen post), not most.
- "Brain training" apps that drill memory or attention without touching reading itself.
- Telling a child to "just try harder" or "sound it out slowly." They are already trying harder than their classmates.
- Vision therapy as a treatment for dyslexia, the eyes are usually fine; the problem is upstream.
what the evidence actually backs
The strongest reviews (the Rose Review in the UK, the National Reading Panel in the US, repeated EEF meta-analyses) keep landing on the same short list:
- Structured, systematic phonics, small, repeated doses, ideally one-to-one or in tiny groups.
- Multi-sensory teaching, saying, hearing, tracing and seeing letters together.
- Audiobooks and text-to-speech alongside print, not instead of it. Hearing the words while seeing them keeps comprehension and vocabulary growing while decoding catches up.
- Generous time. Dyslexic readers are not slower because they're avoiding the work; their brains genuinely take longer to decode. Extra time on tests is an accommodation, not a cheat.
where wobble fits
Wobble is built on the third bullet. Point a camera at a real book, the one the class is already reading, and the app reads aloud the line your finger is under, in distinct character voices, while you keep your eyes on the print. Comprehension stays in the room; decoding load drops. The page never moves to a screen, the child never loses their place, and nobody has to wait for an audiobook version to exist.
The goal is never to replace reading. It's to keep a child in the story long enough that reading becomes possible.
